Multiple European Union states are breaking with post-war liberal conventions and openly imprisoning prominent political opponents and intellectuals for ideological crimes. The tactic being used by these governments is "rule through law," as opposed to rule of law. The strategy is commonly deployed in nations like Saudi Arabia against journalists, intellectuals and opposition figures who are targeted for repression first, then selectively prosecuted using often vaguely defined existing laws after.

Major Dublin restaurant group threatens State with legal action over Covid-19 restrictions

Press Up says there is ‘no empirical, objective and verifiable evidence’ to support closures. One of Dublin’s biggest restaurant groups has threatened the Government with legal action if it extends coronavirus restrictions on pubs and restaurants in the capital beyond October 10th. Lawyers for Press Up group, which employs 1,800 people across five hotels, 12 bars, 27 restaurants and two cinemas, have written to Government, saying Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has published “no empirical, objective and verifiable evidence” to support the closures.

I would rather risk dying and have the joy of their company than lose that vital contribution to my own happiness, writes Salley Vickers. Early on in lockdown I wrote to another newspaper to say I would rather catch Covid 19 and acquire immunity so that I could reoffer my skills to the NHS as a psychotherapist - my profession before I became a full-time writer. I am fit as a flea, walk many miles each day and eat like a rabbit. I also added that I was prepared to sign a formal declaration resigning any rights to a hospital bed or a ventilator.
